DESCRIPTION:In celebration of “Pride Month” please join us for a special opportunity as Kumu Hina comes to Kona to share about Māhū in traditional Hawaiian culture, and her journey as a Māhū wahine (transgender woman), followed by a showing of one of her multi-award winning films “Kapaemahu” in our park amphitheater!\n\nKumu Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu is a Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) teacher, cultural advisor, film maker, and leader. A founding member of Kulia Nā Mamo, a community organization established to improve the quality of life for Māhū wahine, she also served for 13 years as the Director of Culture at a Honolulu public charter school dedicated to using native Hawaiian culture, history, and empowering the next generation of warrior scholars. One of the first transgender candidates to run for statewide political office in the United state in 2014, Kumu Hina also served as chair of the O’ahu Island Burial Council, which oversees the management of Native Hawaiian burial and ancestral remains.\nOn June 3rd from 11:30am – 12:30pm in the Park Amphitheater.
